464: LDS CHURCH PLANS TO BUILD ANOTHER LUXURY SKYSCRAPER - THE THIRD TALLEST IN SLC

LDS Church plans to build the third tallest skyscraper in Salt Lake City.

"The new tower would also be directly across the street from City Creek Center, the upscale LDS Church-built, open-air shopping and residential campus. The $1.5 billion mall, built during the Great Recession, opened to the public in 2012."

"The church-backed skyscraper — being called Tower 8 / 95 State in city paperwork — is proposed to rise 395 feet in the air, according to blueprints from San Francisco-based architects with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill."

Not sure if I have the energy to add commentary to this latest announcement that the Church is going to continue to build luxury high rise buildings when I see so much need for homeless shelters, domestic violence women's facilities, soup kitchens.. or even affordable housing for young families who are struggling... but I guess those endeavors don't bring in revenue to get gain.

Makes you want to ask the question:
WHAT WOULD JESUS BUILD?

  1. And it came to pass that king Noah built many elegant and spacious buildings

And it came to pass that he built a tower near the temple; yea, a very high tower, even so high that he could stand upon the top thereof and overlook the land of Shilom

  2. 26 And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth.

  3. In this fallen world, those who build the biggest buildings tells us about who is in power (as they suppose) at any given time. The early feudal lords and gentile kings of old built impressive fortresses and castles, upon the backs of their subjects or slaves; sultans, dynasties, and emperors had their expansive and luxurious palaces, again built on the backs of their subjects or slaves; then churches grew in power and built their cathedrals and basilicas, upon the backs of the faithful in most cases; then governments grew in size and massive buildings inundated the cities, again built upon the backs of the people in the form of taxes; and then banks and corporations began to dominate the skyline with their skyscrapers, again upon the backs of the people in the form of high rate interest loans, defaults, foreclosures, insurance payments, and other gotcha-type financial maneuvers. The purpose of all these buildings is to "lay up in store" (ie, horde) and manage wealth. And so this is just the latest incarnation of a wealthy and powerful corporation, masquerading as a church, flaunting its wealth, power, and influence; to build a p(a)lace where its wealth is hoarded and managed. Those who possess the gold always build the biggest buildings. These buildings are always "luxurious", "upscale", and "class A"...who would ever build a "crappy", "low scale", or "class C" building? They always think these buildings will last forever. This particular building will sport a crown on top, a parapet, an extra 20-ft tall...ohhhh, how impressive and majestic! I wonder how many millions that will cost? It serves no purpose or function other than to flaunt wealth.

Yet Christ taught in His sermon on the mount: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:"

  6. Last night I was getting really mad when I kept doing searches online for Mormon homeless shelters and Mormon affordable housing and could not find a single link. I also thought as the author of this piece did, about the the young couples will children who work but cannot find affordable housing. Its almost like I was meant to find this page tonight. Very upset about the direction of the church. As far as I can tell they are only interested in building great and spacious buildings that enrich themselves.
