143: ASSURANCE

This past week, The Church News celebrates President Thomas S Monson's five year anniversary as our sustained prophet, seer, and revelator. It also marks his 50 years as being called as a General Authority. There are several articles that are interesting to read that honor his dedicated service. Here are a few of the article titles:
  • Worldwide travels
  • The Prophet's ministry
  • Teachings of the Prophet
  • Timeline of noteworthy events during his five years as prophet.
  • Message from the President Thomas S Monson.
I read the article that contained his message and the following word stood out.. The word 'assure'.

President Monson states.

"I assure you that the Church is in good hands. The system set up for the Council of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve assures that it will always be in good hands and that, come what may, there is no need to worry or to fear."

Assure: . To make safe as from risk. To convince, persuade, or sooth. To tell someone something positively to dispel any doubt they many have.

We live in such a blessed time, I am so glad that the system that is set up for the Brethern assures that is will always be in good hands.

Footnote:
I did a scripture search on lds.org for the word  'prophet' and the word 'assure'. This was the verses that came up:

"..behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place. (meaning the prophets gives the people assurance of peace)

Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed." Jeremiah 14: 13- 15.

That's all I have to say--

Great Reference. All Of Jeremiah 23 and Ezekiel 13 are in the same vein.

This sooth speaking continue to blow my mind. I actually think most of the 15 have never read the Old Testament prophecies or even care to understand them.

The entire 14th chapter of Jeremiah is excellent.

Won't we get some slack on Judgment Day for following false prophets? After all, we're "following the prophet and it's not our fault. Appears not.

I think we may be running out of time.

After reading this post and Jeremiah today, I actually felt sad and afraid for them at the same time (it was a strange feeling) for the brethren. I pray that they can repent before it is too late. At least I am learning to put my trust in the Lord and not in the arm of the flesh. Thanks again for showing those of us far outside of Utah what is in the 'news'.

Everyone, equally, must repent. Not just the 15. I'm trying to focus on my circle of influence which is basically within my family and ward. I certainly can't do anything to influence those in the Church Office Building. And more and more it seems I can't even relate to them.

The Old Testament is a wealth of information concerning the last days. I've only just begun a serious study of the OT in the last 18 months or so.

In "defense" of the GA's... my dad had a friend who was called to the 70 years ago. My dad asked him how his studies were coming along. The GA hated to admit it, but confessed the Church kept him so busy with meetings and travel and administrative things he hardly had time to study anymore at all. I dare say if they have not gained a strong knowledge base at the time of their calling, they may never get one. (Just one experience here.......)

If we are speaking of prophets like we find in the scriptures, all of them point to Christ. None of them point to themselves, and none of them point to the man who runs the church.

Toni, I keep thinking of what it must have been like when Peter was president of the Church. I can only assume that if anyone had thought to place attention on him, he would have reminded them of his weaknesses and pointed them to Christ.

I have a feeling as the generations continue on, we'll get more Christ-centered leadership. I'm in my lower 40s and most people my age do not like the self-adoration. My kids are even less prone to this attitude. It might not be overnight, but I think the changes are coming. The youth today and certainly a different breed than the kids of the 60s were.

I am sure that is the case. Having walked with Christ, denied Him, then taught by Him post-resurrection, I think it would never have occurred to him to point to anyone but Christ.

I hope you are right. It will be interesting to see what happens.
