152: PRESERVING THE SHELL

On December 17, 2010, a fire started inside the Provo Tabernacle. It basically destroyed everything inside the walls. Because the Tabernacle is such an iconic building that has been apart of tradition in Utah Valley since 1883, the outer structure has been preserved. Currently nothing is inside these walls. It is hollow, it is a shell.  The plans now are to built a temple within the confines of the shell.

This is quite a project for the Church to undertake.

This photo brought a few thoughts to my mind. This is my opinion, but too often, I think we limit ourselves in our sacred experiences when we have restrictions, walls, and barriers that we need to fit things into.  I wonder if instead of outside appearance/walls  directing or dictating what the inside will look like....that we were free to have the inside direct what the outside looks like.

I have always liked this quote by President Ezra Taft Benson:

“The Lord works from the inside out.
The world works from the outside in"
....

PS... I  have appreciated the well wishes to my toe for those who read my previous blog. For the record, I did not keep my toenail/shell. I am patiently allowing a new nail/shell to grow in its place.

Unrelated News Story:
Some unrelated news item was left on a previous post about the LDS Church business partner  in the building of City Creek Shopping Center. Interesting times we live in:  City Creek Taubman LINK

In regards to the Taubman thing... It is interesting that the church will digitally remove one of the temple actors who is pro gay marriage, but will happily join up with a convicted swindler, if there is good money to be made.

This is a telling symbol. Seems like a lot of effort is used to prop up the temple shell.

When the church feels the need to publicize their own good works and manipulate church members' testimonies, are they propping up the facade?

Great insight and symbol relating to the tabernacle structure. How often we keep shells and then try to fit things inside a shell that has lots of history and tradition but perhaps is more tradition that truth.

Well put blog author. Thanks

Hiya what's that about? Digitally removing an actor? Thanks

Need to know said...

Can you give us more info on which actor, and in which film?

My understanding is that one of the "apostles" was removed from the older of the two temple films - I cannot remember if it was James or John.

Either way, the actor who played that apostle came out against Proposition 8 in California, said he was in favor of gay marriage, etc. The Church went in and digitally removed him from the temple film.

I am relating this second-hand as I have not been through an endowment session in well over 18 months (in spite of holding a current recommend). As I understand it, he was replaced with another actor.

Seems kind of silly on its surface, since few members have any idea who the actors are in the temple films.

On the temple film topic, there used to be 2 films that would be played, esp. in larger temples with multiple endowment rooms. The one with the blonde woman is no longer viewed as it is reported she was also a participant in a questionable film. I would agree with the one comment, that they seem to pick and choose and there is an inconsistency. If she (the temple film actor)were a wealthy heiress who donated millions to the church would the film been left alone?
